7 CCW Application Mistakes That Delay Your California Permit

Avoid the most common California CCW application mistakes: wrong Live Scan timing, unregistered firearms, unapproved trainers, bad documents and missed deadlines.

Most CCW delays aren't caused by the background check itself. They come from small, avoidable errors on the application. These are the ones we see most often in Riverside County and Los Angeles.

1. Doing Live Scan at the wrong time, or on the wrong form

Riverside County wants Live Scan after you start your Permitium application, using your order number. LAPD accepts only its own Live Scan form (BCIA 8016) filled in exactly. A wrong form or a typo means paying for a second scan and waiting longer.

2. Listing a firearm that isn't registered to you

Every gun on your license must be registered or DROS'd to you through DOJ. Check your records before you apply.

3. Listing guns you won't qualify with

You must qualify with each firearm on the license during training. Bring every gun you list to the range portion of class.

4. Training with a provider your agency doesn't accept

Riverside County accepts vendors on its approved list; LAPD accepts only its authorized providers. A certificate from anyone else is wasted time and money. A2 Defense is accepted by both: see our Riverside County and LAPD classes.

5. Missing LAPD's 90-day training window

LAPD applicants must finish training within 90 days of their approval letter, or the application is withdrawn. Book your class as soon as you're approved.

6. Uploading poor documents

Blurry photos, expired IDs and proof of residency that doesn't meet the agency's rules all cause delays. LAPD, for example, accepts a utility bill or notarized lease, not a vehicle registration.

7. Not answering every question completely and truthfully

Omissions look like dishonesty to an investigator. Disclose what's asked, and if you have a question about a past incident, ask an attorney before you submit.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone help me fill out my CCW application?

Yes. Our CCW Prep & Application session ($99) is a live 2-hour session where an instructor walks you through your agency's application.

What's the most common delay?

Incomplete applications and missing documents. Both Riverside County and LAPD say these slow processing.

Should I list every gun I own?

List the guns you plan to carry and will qualify with. Riverside allows up to six; LAPD allows up to three.

Does a past incident disqualify me?

It depends on the facts. California's disqualification rules are broad; answer every question truthfully and ask an attorney if you're unsure.
